Description

Lightweight Meilenstein EVO Schwarz Edition

If new kit day is good and new bike day the best, then new wheels day must fall somewhere in the middle. Unless that is, your new wheels are the Lightweight Meilenstein EVO Schwarz Edition, perhaps the only wheelset in the world that is possibly more exciting than a whole new bike.

You’ve no doubt been aware of the Meilenstein wheels from Lightweight for some time now, but the EVO tag means that these are an updated, some might say a modernized version of the fantastic all-rounders from the deliberate German carbon experts. For many years now they have continued to buck the trend of wider and wider rims, preferring to stick to the shapes and methods that have worked so well for them in the past. They’ve never given a sh*+ about trends; they’ve just been intent on making the best wheels absolutely possible. What’s caused them to change their approach now? Probably nothing. These aren’t wheels where Lightweight has thrown the baby out with the bathwater. These are classic-looking, classic riding Lightweights. Epically good. They also are tubeless-ready – a first for them – and with wider rims to accommodate the wider tires that most people like to ride these days.

With a sweet-spot profile of 48mm, the Meilenstein EVO Schwarz Edition has a 24mm outer rim with an 18mm inner rim measurement. That means that your wider tubeless tires will be nicely seamless making them more aero, and you can run them at lower pressures to enhance comfort and reduce rolling resistance. Lightweight recommends you fit anywhere between 23 and 32mm tires on these rims. Since these are tubeless disc brake wheels that can accommodate wider road tires, Lightweight definitely wanted to make certain they would be robust enough for everything from epic road events to even more epic gravel grinds and cyclocross races. For one thing, both front and rear have 20 carbon spokes that are crazy stiff to ensure no loss of power transfer. But perhaps most importantly the way the spoke interfaces with the rims and hubs is your biggest insurance policy. By weaving the spoke hole into the fabric of the rim and then bonding the spoke inside, they have ensured no need for truing down the line.

Then Lightweight Meilensteins use what they call a Pentagon hub, which as the name implies, has five sides into which the correspondingly shaped internals fit. This locks everything neatly and securely into the hub shell, which will prevent any potential slippage even under the heaviest of braking. And if that doesn’t sound like much, it is huge, since when your internals get overheated and start moving around inside the hub is when you get catastrophic disc brake failure. And thanks to the fact that these are the Schwarz Edition, you not only get the very sleek looking Black on Black rim graphics, but you’ll enjoy the upgraded Ceramic Speed ceramic bearings to enhance the already breathtakingly low rolling resistance Lightweights offer.

The Lightweight Meilenstein EVO Schwarz Edition will enhance every ride and improve the performance and appearance of every bike. They weigh just 1380 grams for the pair, and are recommended for a rider/bike weight of up to 120kg or 265 pounds.
